Trending In Social Media: #IceBucketChallenge Roundup

by 123FormBuilder

A bucket, cold water and a bag of ice cubes… Does this sound familiar to you? I bet it does. After all, your social media newsfeeds are invaded by your friends and all kinds of celebrities who pour a bucket of ice water over their heads. The ALS #IceBucketChallenge has taken over social media in an attempt to raise awareness over the neurodegenerative disease.

Just a quick overview on what ALS is

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, results in an alteration of a patient’s muscle health, affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Thus, people with ALS will progressively encounter severe difficulties in everything involving muscles – speaking, breathing, swallowing, moving. The disease is surnamed after a famous American baseball player diagnosed with ALS. In the medical field, there is still a quest for finding a cure for this disorder. Currently, patients with ALS may receive different treatments to linder the disease’s effects and prolong the survival.

The ALS Association is dedicated towards sustaining and funding research, as well as towards supporting both researchers and patients who fall under this condition.

#IceBucketChallenge: The campaign

Born out of the desire to heavily increase awareness upon ALS and its impact, a new campaign has set the social media world on fire. The Ice Bucket Challenge has taken ownership of ice water buckets that people throw over their heads. The challenge goes this way (just in case you may not be up to date with it):
– you are being challenged by a friend (or “friend”?) to take a really cold bucket-bath
– you have 24 hours to fulfill the challenge, otherwise you’re prompted to donate $100 to the association
– even if you accept the challenge, you are still encouraged to donate
– you prepare the following: a bucket, water, ice cubes; optionally: a dry towel and a hot tea
– you record a video and share it on social media, without forgetting to say whom you challenge next – usually three other people.

While the campaign received some criticism as of encouraging social media bravery, since not everyone actually donates to the cause, it did really prove out to be effective. NY Times reported a donation amount of $41.8 million between July 29 and August 21, compared to the $19.4 million the association raised last year. And the campaign has not ended yet. With celebs like former President George W. Bush, Bill Gates or Victoria Beckham, chances are ALS awareness strikes unprecedented values.

What about 123FormBuilder?

Yes, we have been nominated by [e-spres-oh], a fellow company from Timisoara, Romania, to take the Ice Bucket Challenge. Because we care about this type of causes and because we wanted to show our support, the 123FormBuilder team (at least the ones that were not on holiday or with a flu) took a cold bucket-bath for the good cause.

We’ve armed ourselves with buckets, cold water and lots of ice cubes.

We prepared dry clothes and towels, since it was not the hottest day outside. And then, armed with a lot of courage, we went to the park just outside our company. Under the curious and somewhat suspicious eyes of the people passing through the park, we lined up with our buckets. After Florin, our CEO, said a few words about our challen

So yeah, we’ve challenged our friends from Paymo, a time tracking and project management tool, Hootsuite, the social media management platform, and Formstack – our competitor – because we love fair play.

If there’s one thing we would like to say after doing the challenge, then it’s… Well, it’s actually two things. First is that apart from dumping that ice water on us, we’ve also donated to the ALS Association. We hope progress will be made to help find a cure for this disease, so fingers crossed. Second, we have to admit the challenge was fun to fulfill as a team effort. Darn, it was cold, though.

It’s your turn now!

You have the proof above – we already completed the challenge. Now we would like to see you in action. Did you take part in this campaign? We’d absolutely love to see your video or a funny shot. And because the ice is so cold, we have some hot news to warm you up: the best video gets its owner a full month of our Platinum subscription.
